The Children of the Spanish Civil War

The number of children who had to leave Spain in the Civil War (1936-1939) were over 35.000, all of them within a range between 5 to 15 years old, all of them also belonged to the Republican side.

France is considered to be the main host country where over 20.000 children would have taken shelter, followed afar by Belgium, second main destination for over 5.000. To Great Britain they went another 4.000, and the Soviet Union (USSR) took over 3.000 in.

There were other overseas countries that admitted threatened-by-war children such as Mexico (455), Switzerland (450) and Denmark (100). Over half of all the refugee children would come back to Spain after the war, but the other half had to stay in their host countries for the rest of their lives.
